Leaves and feathers made of a cord – we’ve gone nuts for them! Not only us but they are a big part of the handicrafts world. Monika has also fallen in love with them and she has decided to enthuse with them for those of you who still haven’t had a chance to try to make a feather using cord. Let’s do it!

Monika will show you how to make a feather that can be hung on a wall as a decoration. You may also change the idea and make a macramé wall hanging or any other decoration with feathers

Step 1

To start, prepare 46 x about 15 cm long pieces of cord.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 2

Prepare also about a 40cm long piece of Macramé Cord and double it.

Place 1 piece of doubled Twisted Macramé UNDER the “core”.

Step 1

Step 3

Take another Twisted Macramé and double it.

Step 1

Step 4

Place it on the core passing the endings of the cord that is under through the loop, as it is shown in the picture.

Step 1

Step 5

Pass the endings of the cord ON the core through the loop of the cord UNDER the core.

Step 1

Step 6

Pull the cords tightly.

Step 1

Step 7

Now, we’re going to make the next “rib” of the feather. Put doubled twisted cords under the core. This time, change the side. We’re going to start the following ribs by placing the cord on a different side each time, by turns.

Step 1

Step 8

Take another piece of cord and, as previously, pass the endings of the cord UNDER the core through the loop of the cord ON the core.

Step 1

Step 9

Pass the endings of the cord ON the core through the loop of the cord UNDER the core.

Step 1

Step 10

Pull tightly and make another rib. Place the cord UNDER the core, but from another side than previously. Take the second cord and pass the endings through the loops. Pull tightly.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

Step 11

Continue adding the following ribs the same way. You won’t make any mistake if you remember that you need to place the twisted cord UNDER the core where there is a core on the top of the knot in the previous rib. It’s marked with an “X”.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

Step 4

Step 12

If you have 4 pieces of cord left, it means it’s time to finish your work. Loose the last knot a bit and put 2 doubled pieces of cord inside the knot.

If you decide to use a twisted cord as the core, there is no need to finish your work like this. In that case, the core will be the bottom part of the feather.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 13

Take 2 last pieces of the cord and tie the last knot with them. It will take both the core and the added cords.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 14

Take the comb and comb out the cords gently. There, where you added the cords under the knot, hold the cords so that they won’t go out from there.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 15

Cut the unneeded part of the core at the back. Don’t cut too much, because the feather may unweave.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 16

Cut out a piece of cardboard in the shaper of a leaf. Put it on your feather and slowly cut the feather with sharp scissors, Part by part, don’t tense up. It’s supposed to be relaxing, isn’t it?

Step 1

Step 17

And it’s done! Now you need to use the hairspray to make your feather stiff.

Step 1

Step 18

I’ve got a set of feathers hung on the wall and nothing happens to them. They please my eye and bring comfort!

Step 1

Step 19

Now you know how to make a feather using cord!

We are very curious about how you are going to use them. There are limitless possibilities so you create to your heart’s content. Remember, you can share your work on our Facebook Group
