How to make elegant beaded earrings – a beading tutorial with MATUBO beads

Difficulty: Intermediate
I’ve decided to share the effects of my playing with MATUBO beads with you. I’ve always loved SuperDuo and I didn’t expect the rest of this beading family to fascinate me equally. I’ve purchased a lot of these beads to create something mine and unique. But I just couldn’t keep it only for myself. I had to share the pattern with you! So I invite you to spend some time with me. You will learn how to make elegant beaded earrings.
Supplies used in this project:
- GINKO beads – 16 pieces
- GEMDUO – 16 pieces
- 11/0 TOHO – 1 or 2 colours (it’s up to you)
- 3 mm CrystaLove ball
- 2 long drop beads
- earwires
- beading thread
- beading needle
- scissors
Step 1
Our tutorial is just a suggestion, so you may use your imagination and create jewellery in a completely different style. So we hope to see a rash of varicoloured earrings.
Step 2
String 4 TOHO and tie a knot with both thread ends (an arm span long piece of thread).
Step 3
Add 1 bead between the beads already strung.
Step 4
Pass through 2 beads of the previous row while adding the last bead.
Step up to the 3rd row. You should get something similar to a square.
Step 5
In this row, add 2 TOHO beads between the corners of the square. I used another colour here.
Step 6
Pass through 2 beads while adding the last 2 beads. One bead of the previous row and one of the new row.
Step 7
In this row, we will add beads in all of the gaps between TOHO beads – 8 beads in total.
Step 8
Pass through 2 beads while adding the last 2 beads. Leave the thread at the corner.
Step 9
We can finally use MATUBO beads. Add 1 GEMDUO bead between the corners of TOHO beads. Make sure you string them the same side up each time, because their sides are different. As you have completed the row, pass the needle so that the thread comes out of the GEMDUO bead.
Step 10
Add 1 TOHO bead between GEMDUOs. Pull the thread tight and I recommend to pass through this row once again pulling the thread tight. This will put the GEMDUOs up a bit.
Step 11
Pass the needle through the top hole of the GEMDUO bead.
Step 12
String 1 GINKO and 3 TOHO.
Step 13
Pass through the 2nd hole of the GINKO bead and pass through the GEMDUO bead.
Step 14
Continue until you have completed the whole row – adding 1 GINKO between all of the GEMDUOs pulling the thread tight. After that, pass the thread through the beads so that it comes out of TOHO beads at the top of a GINKO.
Step 15
Now we need to put everything together using TOHO and CrystaLove beads. String TOHO – CrystaLove – TOHO.
Step 16
Now, you need to work intuitively. TOHO beads may differ in shape depending on the finish. Sometimes you just need to add a sequence of TOHO – CrystaLove – TOHO all the way around and sometimes you need to add 2 TOHO – CrystaLove - 2 TOHO at one place. I used TOHO Hybrid here and I had to add 1 TOHO bead more at some places. The point is that the earring won’t roll due to the insufficient number of beads or it won’t be too tight. The earring just needs to have a nice shape.
Below you may find some information about the number of beads I added, but you need to feel it and change it if it’s needed.
Step 17
Attach the earwire. The thread should come out before a CrystaLove bead. Choose a proper place so that the earring will be symmetric. String 5 TOHO and the earwire. If the loop of the earrwire is too small for 11/0 TOHO, use 15/0 TOHO instead, but string more beads. At a guess ☺. As you have made the loop, pass the needle through the whole earring around. I do it twice, gently. Trim the thread.
Step 18
Make the square from the beginning of the tutorial once again. Stop before adding GEMDUOs. The thread comes out of one of the corners.
Step 19
And now – if the drop has a big hole (as my drop), string 2 TOHO – CrystaLove and the drop. If the hole is small, you may string 2 TOHO and the drop.
Step 20
Then, if the hole is big, string a CrystaLove bead. If the hole is small, string 3 TOHO and pass back through the drop.
Step 21
Pass through the drop, CrystaLove and ONE TOHO. String 1 TOHO bead and pass through the bead at the corner of the square and then pass through TOHO, CrystaLove and the drop once again.
Step 22
Pass the needle through the beads towards the corner opposite the one you’ve attached the drop to. String 2 TOHO and pass through a CrystaLove bead opposite the earwire.
Step 23
String 2 TOHO and pass through the bead at the corner once again and repeat the previous step once again with the thread only. Pass the needle around the loop once again.
Pass towards the square. Pass through the beads towards the centre of the square and cut the thread. Do the same with the rest of the threads. Pass through the beads and trim.
Step 24
It’s finally finished!
Step 25
I’m very curious about your versions of the earrings.
Maybe you’re planning to make more cheerful and crazy versions! Maybe a tassel instead of a drop? Or maybe the mandala itself meets your expectations? Whatever your plans are, we believe the effects will be stunning.
We’re waiting for your versions of these earrings and look forward to seeing them on our Facebook group.
