Eco mesh bags have been fashionable recently. You can see more and more chrochet mesh bags on the Internet now. I know there are lots of crochet mesh bag tutorials, but they are mainly video ones or crochet patterns. So I thought it would be great to prepare a photo French market bag tutorial because some of you prefer these types of tutorials. So, today I will show you how two make a big two-colour French market bag step by step – a bag you can put a lot inside!

Supplies used in this project:

  • yarns – here I used: YarnArt Jeans Plus. I used almost 3 skeins. You can use other yarns as well, e.g. YarnArt Jeans, Macrame, Macrame Cotton, Ideal, etc.
  • crochet hook – I used 4mm hook, but everyone crochets in a different way so you need to choose the best hook size for you
  • needle
  • scissors

As everything is prepared, let’s start to work!

Step 1

Make 31 chain stitches.

The part we’re going to make now I’m going to call a ribbing. IMPORTANT! If you prefer a smaller bag, start with 25/27 chains.

Now, we are going to make double crochets in our chains starting from the 2nd chain from the hook (marked with a circle).

Step 1

Step 2

Step 2

Yarn over and pull through. There are two loops on the hook now.

Step 1

Step 3

Yarn over and pull through both loops. This is our 1st double crochet.

Step 1

Step 4

Continue until you have completed the whole row. There should be 30 double crochets in total.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

Step 4

Step 5

Step 5

Chain 1 to start the 2nd row.

Step 1

Step 6

Make 1 double crochet in the 1st chain (marked with a circle).

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

Step 7

Continue to complete the whole row.

Continue making the following rows the same way. I made 8 rows, but you can make more or less rows if you want.

Step 1

Step 8

Now we’re going to make ‘the mesh part’. Take the yarn in the 2nd colour and chain 1.

Step 1

Step 9

Pull it through the chain as shown in the picture.

Step 1

Step 10

Chain 7.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 11

Tie the yarn endings together.

IMPORTANT! If you prefer smaller openwork, chain only 5. Then, insert your hook into the 2nd chain and make a double crochet, as shown in the picture.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

Step 12

Chain 7 and insert your hook into the nearest chain of the previous row.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 13

Continue the same way until you have completed the whole row.

Step 1

Step 14

Chain 7 and make a double crochet in the 1st mesh.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 15

Chain 7 and make a double crochet in the 2nd mesh.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 16

Continue this way until you have completed this row and then make the following ones. I used two skeins of yarn to make the “mesh part”.

Step 1

Step 17

Thread the end of the yarn the way shown in the picture to secure your bag.

Step 1

Step 18

Take the 1st colour of yarn once again and chain 1.

Step 1

Step 19

Pull this chain though the 1st mesh, as shown in the pictures.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

Step 4

Step 20

Make a double crochet in the 2nd mesh.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

Step 4

Step 21

Continue this way until you have completed the whole row.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

Step 4

Step 5

Step 6

Step 22

Chain 1 and make 1 double crochet in the 1st chain of the previous row.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

Step 4

Step 23

Continue this way until you have had 8 rows (or the number of rows you made at the beginning).

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

Step 24

We’re going to make the sides and handles of the mesh bag now.

Starting from the 1st handle, chain 70 and chain 1 at the 2nd end of the ribbing, as shown in the pictures.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

Step 25

Make 1 double crochet for each row at the side of the ribbing – I made 8 double crochets.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 26

Now, we need to make double crochets in the meshes, as it was done at the beginning of the 18th step.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

Step 27

And again, double crochets at the side of the ribbing.

Step 1

Step 28

We’ve made the beginning of the 1st handle and one side of the bag. Make the 2nd handle and the 2nd side the same way.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 29

It’s almost done. Our bag has taken shape, but its handles and side are still too thin. We need to finish them off with double crochets.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 30

I made 4 rows that way, but I made slip stitches in two last chains so that there isn’t too big step.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 31

The mesh bag is finished. Now you need to secure the endings and cut them. I make small knots and hide them in my work with a needle, just to be sure.

Step 1

Step 32

Surely, you know now how to make a crochet mesh bag and you may make more than one! They are very convenient and you can make your French market bag in your very own unique style, e.g. by playing with colours. Having fun is the most important part!
