HOW TO MAKE BUTTERFLY EARRINGS – JEWELLERY MAKING TUTORIAL

We are madly in love with the magical, ethereal Organza Wings here at BD HQ and Joanne has created another quick project to inspire you.

I am not ordinarily drawn to delicate or classically 'girly' things, but the organza wings have really sparked my interest. I have found myself thinking about ways we can turn them into wearable jewellery and how they can be secured to wires a LOT. So here is something I thought of as I drifted off to sleep last night .... I am looking forward to seeing what your creative minds dream up. Joanne xx

Our tutorials are mostly for inspiration and learning purposes. Choose the colours to achieve something in your own style!

Step 1

To begin, using a tiny amount of glue, add flat back crystals to 2 small set of wings. Allow the glue to completely dry before you continue to the next step.

Step 1

Step 2

Position the small wings over the top of the large ones.
Load a needle with thread. Centre the thread on the needle and knot at the end, leaving an approximate 1-inch tail (the tail will become antenna later).
Pass the wings halfway through the ear wires and fold in half. Position them as symmetrically as possible.

Step 1

Step 3

Hold the wings firmly, pulling them gently against the wire. Working from the bottom, lay the 1-inch tail flat against the wire, sew through the wings, passing over the ear wire and tail and encasing the wire in organza. Continue to sew up to the top of the wings. Tie off and trim excess (leaving the antenna poking out of the top).

Step 1

Step 4

Open a Jump ring and attach to one of the drops and close. Using another jump ring, attach the drop to the base of the ear wire. Fold out and separate the wings.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 5

Repeat all steps for the second earring.
