How to make a beaded table mat – a bead weaving step by step tutorial

Information about this project

Designed by: Honorata Bielecka

Difficulty: Intermediate

Rating:

We love tiny seed beads because they provide a wide range of possibilities and they can be used not only to make jewellery. Honorata Bielecka knows it and she will show you how to weave a gorgeous table mat using seed beads which will make a colourful, extraordinary and inimitable decoration of a positively crazy handicrafts woman. The mat will also make a wonderful gift for someone close to you. So we encourage you to join us and stitch with us. We’re going to have lots of fun!

I’m sure you have seen jewellery or other decorations that are made by stitching several beads at the same time. They make a kind of a weaved net. In this tutorial I will teach you a bead weaving technique – tissage danese. The technique is very pleasant and quite fast to do. I will show you how to make a colourful table mat in a simple way. The technique is about adding 3 beads at the same time so that our work grows quite fast.

Supplies used in this project:

non-transparent 11/0 TOHO beads in Opaque series

beading needles - 11 size John James,

sharp scissors,

strong thread - white One-G

Let’s begin.

Step 1

Some useful tips:

Don’t pull your thread too tightly, because the mat may roll – the beads need to have some space to sit properly. If you run out of the thread, attach a new thread using the barrel knot. If the thread is thick and you can’t pass the knot through the beads, attach a new thread by passing it through several beads of the previous rows instead. Tie a knot properly and pull it tightly so that it won’t break while stitching. I will use One-G thread in this tutorial, but you are free to use any other – just make sure you choose a strong and soft thread. I will use 11/0 TOHO beads, but you may use any small, round beads.

Step 1

Step 2

Row 1

String 8 white (Opaque White) beads, tie the threads to make a circle and pass the needle through 2 beads.

Step 1

Step 3

Row 2

String white, dark green (Opaque Pine Green) and white beads. Pass the needle through the 2nd bead. Repeat 3 times with this sequence passing through every other bead.

Step 1

Step 4

You should have a small square. Always stitch a proper sequence around your whole work to finish at the beginning of the current row. Pass the thread through the central bead of the current row. You will usually start a new row from the central bead.

Step 1

Step 5

Row 3

String a sequence of 2 light green (Opaque Sour Apple), dark green and 2 light green beads and pass through the sticking out bead (green). Repeat until you have completed the whole row.

Step 1

Step 6

Row 4

Pass the needle through the beads previously strung so that the needle comes out before the dark green bead of the 3rd row. String a sequence of: light green, dark green, light green and pass the needle through 5 beads of the previous row so that the thread is before the dark green bead of the 3rd row. Repeat until you have completed the whole row.

Step 1

Step 7

Row 5

The thread comes out of the dark green bead placed above a dark green bead of the 3rd row. String dark green, white, dark green and pass this sequence of beads through every dark green bead sticking out.

Step 1

Step 8

Row 6

Pass the needle through the dark green of the 3rd row. String a sequence of 1 light green, 1 dark green and 1 light green bead. Pass through the next dark green bead. String 3 dark green beads and pass the needle through the next dark green bead. Continue adding those two sequences of beads alternately until you have completed the whole row.

Step 1

Step 9

Row 7

Add 3 light green beads between the sticking out beads of the previous row.

You can see an octagonal, starlike shape now. From now on, we will repeat similar step – we will add 5 beads every third row that will make the corners of the star and the extendedness. Whereas, we will always add 3 beads through the whole width of the mat passing through every central bead of the previous row.

Step 1

Step 10

Row 8

Pass the thread through the top bead of the bend of the previous row. String 5 light green beads and pass the needle through the next top bead. Important, the bend just added must be placed above the white bead of the 5th row. String 1 green (Shamrock), 1 dark green and 1 green bead and pass the needle through the next top bead of the previous row. Continue until you have completed the whole row.

Step 1

Step 11

Row 9

Pass the needle through the 2nd of 5 beads of the bend of the previous row, string 3 light green beads and pass the needle through the 4th bead of the same bend. String 3 green beads and pass the needle through the central, dark green bead of the bend of the previous row. String 3 green beads and pass the needle through the 2nd bead of the next bend.

Every time, where the are 5 beads added in the previous row, we will start a new row from the 2nd bead of the bend, then add a bend passing through the 4th one.

Step 1

Step 12

Row 10

Pass the needle through the central bead of the corner of the star. String 3 green bead and pass the needle through the next central bead of the previous row. String 1 white, 1 dark brown (Opaque Oxblood) and 1 white and pass the needle through the next central bead of the previous row. String 3 green beads and pass the needle through the next central bead. Note, the dark brown bead is the axis of symmetry of the mat – we can see a mirror image now

Step 1

Step 13

Row 11

Pass the needle through the corner of the star. String 3 white beads and pass through the dark brown bead. String 2 white beads and pass the needle through the next central bead. Add a bend of 5 green beads above the corner of the star.

Step 1

Step 14

Row 12

String 1 beige (Opaque Lt Beige), 1 dark brown and 1 beige bead and pass the needle through the central bead of the bend of the previous row. String 3 white beads and pass the needle through the 2nd bead of the next bend. String 3 green beads that make the corner of the star and pass the needle through the 4th bead of the same bend. String 3 white beads and pass the needle through the white bead of the previous row.

Step 1

Step 53

Row 39, the last one

In this row, add bends of 3 white beads except the corner of the star, where we add 3 brown beads. As you have completed the whole row, tie a knot on the thread of the previous row, pass the needle with the thread through several rows to hide the it and trim.

Step 1

Step 54

It’s finished!

The table mat is 18cm in diameter and it weighs 58g. Its advantage is that it doesn’t require starching – you may smooth it with your hand. You can make it bigger by adding more rows of beads and making a mat of any diameter.

I encourage you to look for some information about the tissage danese technique, the colourful table mats patterns and to create your own mats. The patterns you may find are usually only with description (like amigurumi toys patterns), that tells the number and the colour of beads you need to add and which bead you need to pass your needle through.

Step 1

Step 55

Now we all know how to make a beaded table mat. We can weave, stitch and choose the colours we want, ‘cause the TOHO colour range provides endless possibilities. We can’t wait to see your works on our Facebook group.
