How to make beaded fan earrings – A jewellery making tutorial
Designed by: Paula Ziemska
Difficulty: Intermediate
You can never have enough earrings. They go perfectly with every outfit. The more earrings there are in your drawer, the better. We, handicraftswomen, are lucky because we can make any kind of earrings we want. We can make a pair of earrings for each of our blouses or dresses. All you need is a bit of time, a handful of beads, a thread and a needle. Paula Ziemska has got a big collection of earrings and she would like to help you to complete yours. This time she will show you how to make fan earrings. She will use beads in various sizes, so you may learn something new again. Let’s do this!
You can add all the items you need to your basket by clicking the box in the 'Products used' section above, or you can let your imagination run wild and choose your own materials from the links below. Please note that the colours for the products illustrated in the image above do not match the 'Products Used List'.
- Earring wires
- Jump Rings - 10mm & 6mm
- Beading thread
- 11/0, 8/0, 6/0 TOHO beads
- 3 and 4 mm Fire Polish or Crystal
- Scissors
- Pliers
- Glue (e.g. Super Glue)
We believe that jewellery should be as individual as you are and so our tutorials are for inspiration and learning purposes. They include links to the relevant categories for you to choose your own colour combinations and we positively encourage you to experiment with different shapes, sizes, finishes, composition and texture. Why not choose your own beads and colours to achieve something in your own style? Let your creative imagination run wild and make your dream piece of jewellery?
Step 1
First of all, take 2 of the larger jump rings and put some glue on the ends of the rings. It will prevent the thread from going through the gaps of the rings.
Step 2
Let the glue dry.
Now, prepare 60 cm long thread and thread the needle.
Step 3
Tie a knot and leave about 10 cm tail.
Step 4
String 2 11/0 TOHO beads, pass the needle under the split ring and pass through the 2nd TH bead.
Step 5
String 1 bead and repeat the moves from the 3rd step. You should add 16 TH beads in total.
Step 6
Tie a knot using your working and tail threads.
Step 7
Row 2
It’s going to be the most difficult part. Choose one of the beads – it will be the central part of the circle. Count two beads starting from the central beads. Pass the needle between the connecting threads of these two beads.
Step 8
We are by the 3rd bead (counting from the central one) and we will start making the fan here. String 2 8/0 TH and pass the needle under the connecting threads of 11/0 TH beads. Pass the needle under the connecting threads and pass through the 2nd 8/0 TH.
Step 9
String 1 bead and continue with the Brick Stitch. Add 10 beads in total the same way.
Step 10
Row 3
It’s time to add 3 mm FP beads. We will add 14 FP in total, so more than in the previous row. That means, we will add two beads at one connection in some parts.
Step 11
You need to work intuitively – if there is a gap, it means you should add an extra bead there
Step 12
Row 4
It’s time for 6/0 TH beads. There will be 12 of them in this row. 1 less than a number of spaces in the previous row. That’s why we start the 4th row from stringing 2 beads and passing the needle under the 2nd connecting thread (between the 2nd and the 3rd bead) – not the 1st one.
Step 13
Add 1 bead each time, until you have completed this row.
Step 14
Row 5
We will add 4 mm FP beads now. There will be 16 of them in total, so analogously to the 3rd row – if there’s a gap, add an extra FP bead.
As you can see, there are 11/0 TH beads except for the FP in the 5th row (added to finish the fan in a decorative way). How to do that? String FP – TH - FP and pass the needle under the connecting threads of the previous row.
Step 15
Pass the needle through the 2nd FP bead.
Step 16
Continue stringing TH and FP beads. Remember, the working thread should come out of a FP bead.
Step 17
Continue until you have completed the whole row.
Step 18
Pass the needle towards the last connecting threads that connect 11/0 and 4 mm FP. Make a loop and pass the needle through the whole side of the fan. Cut the unneeded part of the thread.
Step 19
Finally, it’s time to finish your work. Thread the needle with the slack thread, string 8/0 TH bead and place it above the central bead of your work.
Step 20
Pass the needle under the connecting threads.
Step 21
And then, pass the needle through the 2nd side of the fan and through the near rows
Step 22
Cut the unneeded part of the thread.
Step 23
Attach a smaller jump ring to the 8/0 TH bead and attach an earring wire to the jump ring.
Step 24
One earring is done. One more to make. Make it quickly and show your fans in our group. I’m waiting for the results of your work impatiently.
Step 25
You know how to make fan earrings, so now it’s time for your colouristic and beading combinations. We really hope that we will find plenty of works on our Facebook group.
