Step 1

Thread your needle with approx. 1 metre of thread.

Pick up 5 x GD beads, ensuring they are all the same side up and that you go through the same side of each.

Step 1

Step 2

Pass through all of them again to form a circle. Pull tight and tie the thread ends together in a double knot where they meet.

Thread the tail onto the needle and tie off and trim the tail.

Step 1

Step 3

Step up through the empty hole on the nearest GD Bead.

Step 1

Step 4

Pick up 1 x CB by the bottom hole and pass through the empty hole on the next GD along.

Again, ensure it is the right way up.

Step 1

Step 5

Repeat all round the star until you a CB between all 5 points and your thread exits the first GD.

Tension: Keep snug throughout. If you keep it too tight the motifs will pucker - we want to keep them flat.

Step 1

Step 6

Pass up through the top hole of the CB.

Step 1

Step 7

Pick up 4 x TR.

Step 1

Step 8

Pass back through the top hole of the CB your thread is exiting  so that the TR beads sit on top of it.

Step 1

Step 9

Pick up 1 x FP and pass down through the top hole of the nearest GD.

Step 1

Step 10

Pick up 1 x FP and pass up through the top hole of the next CB along.

Step 1

Step 11

Repeat steps 7 to 10 all the way around until you reach the first 4 x TR added.

Pass through the top hole of the CB they sit upon.

Step 1

Step 12

Following the bead path, pass through all the FP bead and top holes of the GD & CB only.

This will not only add strength and durability to your motif, it will neaten the pattern.

Tie in the thread and trim.

Repeat all steps twice to make 2 more motifs.

Step 1

Step 13

Putting the motifs to one side, add approx. 2 metres of thread to your needle.

Add a jump ring to a clasp from the findings kit. Add a jump ring to the jump ring just added.

New beaders might find this How to Use a Jump Ring video tutorial useful.

Step 1

Step 14

Pick up 4 x TR and the lower jump ring.

Step 1

Step 15

Leaving a 10cm tail, pass though all 4 again and tie a double knot where the threads meet. This will pull the 4 TR into a square around the jump ring.

Step 1

Step 16

Ensuring your thread exits the lower bead (as image), pick up 3 x TR beads.

Step 1

Step 17

Pass back through the bead your thread is exiting from, but on the opposite direction.

Pass through the next 2 beads until you are exiting the lower bead of the trio just added.

Repeat steps 17, 18 & 19 to reach your desired length.

Step 1

Step 18

Measurement notes:
Each side strap on my necklace measures 17.5cm, giving me a total necklace length of 46cm.
The finished Motif trio will measure approx. 9cm and the Clasp and jump rings measure approx. 2cm.
So: 46 minus 11 divided by 2 = 17.5 strap length.

This measurement is a guide only and the finished length depends entirely on where you would like the motif trio to sit on your neck/collar bone.

Step 19

When you have reached the desired length, pick up 2 x TR, 1 x FP and 2 x TR.

Pass back through the TR your thread is exiting as before.

Step 1

Step 20

Pass through the next 2 x TR and FP

Step 1

Step 21

Pick up 2 x TR, 1 x GB (lower hole) and 1 x TR.

Step 1

Step 22

Pass down through a FP on one of your motifs.

Step 1

Step 23

Pass through the top hole of the nearest GD

Step 1

Step 24

Pass up through the next FP and pick up 1 x TR

Step 1

Step 25

Pass through the empty hole of the GD at the base of the strap. Pick up 2 x TR and pass back through the FP.

Step 1

Step 26

Follow the bead path and pass through all of the beads added in steps 22 through to step 26. Then continue along until you exit the 3rd FP along (as image).

Step 1

Step 27

Pick up 1 x TR. 1 x GD (top hole) and 1 x TR and pass down through the top FP on a second motif

Step 1

Step 28

Pass though the top hole of the GD and up through the FP. Pick up 1 x TR, pass through the empty hole of the GD and pick up another 1 x TR, Pass though the lower FP on the first motif and pull snug.

Step 1

Step 29

Pass through this little circle again: The top hole of the GD, FP, TR, GD, TR, FP, top hole of GD, FP, TR, GD, TR and FP.

Passing back through the top holes again, follow the bead path until you exit the 3rd FP along on the 2nd motif.

Repeat steps 29, 30 & 31 top join the third motif to the other 2. You should now be exiting the 3rd FP on the third motif.

Step 1

Step 30

Pick up 1 x TR, 1 x GD (top hole), 2 x TR, 1 x FP, 2 x TR and pass back though the empty hole of the GD just added.

Step 1

Step 31

Pick up 1 x TR and pass through the 2nd FP on the motif.

Step 1

Step 32

Again, pass back through all of these beads added in step 33 & 34 and FP, GD & FP of the motif.

Continue along the bead path until you exit the FP.

Pick up 5 x TR and pass back through the FP from the opposite direction.

Step 1

Step 33

Pass back through 3 of these TR and pick up 3 x TR to begin the strap which will mirror the first one.

Step 1

Step 34

Once you have reached your desired length, join 2 jump rings together and attach them to the strap in the same manner as the lobster clasp and jump ring in steps 14 & 15.

Step 1

Step 35

Tie off and trim threads and it is ready to wear!
