I caught up with Natalia Colman so she could introduce us to her brand new, hot off the press book ‘Silver Clay with Style’. This is an excellent book for those who want to make jewellery from silver clay! There are plenty of hints and tips as well as new tecniques and jewellery projects. Here Natalia tells us more……
I had been thinking about writing a silver clay book for a few years, so it’s been like a dream come true to finally see it in print. The first part of the book is a collection of all the questions I’m asked when I’m teaching my workshops. There are so many things that we need to know about handling and working with the clay that just didn’t seem to be written down anywhere. When I first started making jewellery with silver clay I wanted to know information such as; how long to dry the clay for, whether dried out clay could be ground back down into a lump or paste form and how would I do this? What’s the best way to fire pieces and how can you bring a beautiful, glossy shine to the silver? What gemstones are safe to be fired in silver clay and what are the essential tools I need? I did a lot of research for the book and put into words all of the experience I’ve gained working with silver clay so that everyone who reads the book can benefit.
The second part of the book consists of 22 projects; I’ve covered a wide range of jewellery including rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, pendants and even men’s jewellery. Designing and making these pieces was so much fun and very rewarding. I felt like a proud parent every time one was completed and photographed. I know it’s bad to have favourites, but I confess that I’m particularly fond of my little silver fox and the butterfly bangle.
I hope everyone who buys the book enjoys reading it and picks up lots of knowledge and skills. It’s certainly been a terrific learning curve for me, one that I have loved every minute of!
