Jewellery Business Success Stories – Helen Dyer
by Helen Dyer
Hi, my name is Helen and I have been making jewellery for about three years now. So when my husband got a job at Beads Direct a couple of years ago I was quite excited.
I started to make more and more and as I did my enjoyment of beading grew. About eighteen months ago an opportunity arose for me to sell my jewellery in a friend’s flower shop. It was never my intention to do this, but my friend convinced me I had nothing to lose so we gave it a try. We decided to put a few pieces in the shop window so that it would be seen by passers by and not just regular flower buyers. This worked and things began to sell. I was also contacted by customers asking if I could make specific pieces for them, which has been challenging at times but exciting to do. I have just begun to help in the shop part time, and always get a thrill when I sell something I have made.
My jewellery isn’t expensive because at the end of the day I’m making it for pleasure and anything I sell is a bonus. My advice to someone thinking of selling their work is to approach small shops and ask – they can only say no, and you never know, someone might just say yes.
Thanks for sharing Helen, sometimes jewellery business opportunities come up when you are least expecting them!
